Canada vs Chile Prediction & Match Preview

CANADA and Chile square off in their final Group A fixture at the Copa America with both teams still in with a chance to progress. The Chileans have not been at their best so far but with their back to the wall, should step up and secure the required result.

Canada are coming off their first victory over a South American opponent in 24 years as they triumphed 1-0 over Peru last time out Jonathan David struck the only goal midway through the second half as they were able to hold on for the win.

It was a good way to bounce back for Canada after beginning their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to champions Argentina. While manager Jesse Marsch will be pleased with the result, the Canadians played most of the second half with a man’s advantage and could not add to their lead.

Chile are still seeking their first win at the Copa America as they followed up a draw in their opening fixture with a 1-0 defeat to Argentina. They held off the reigning champions for long periods before conceding a late winner.

The Chileans may still be without a win but manager Ricardo Gareca will feel his side should have got more from their matches. They have created a lot of chances, especially in the opening fixture and will hope to be more clinical on Sunday.

Chile have the upper hand among the bookies and are priced at evens with Betfred to claim the win. A victory for Canada is valued at 11/5 while a draw is set at odds of 11/5.

There has been just one previous meeting between Canada and Chile with both teams playing out a 2-2 draw back in 1987.

Big players often show their quality when the chips are down and the Chileans will be looking to Alexis Sanchez to provide the spark. The forward is the all-time leading scorer for Chile and could be worth keeping an eye on at 12/5 by Betfred, even if his age and form aren’t suggesting he’s on top of things at the moment.

Jonathan David was on target last time out and remains the biggest attacking threat for Canada. The striker is priced at 3/1 by Betfred to find the net once again and in pair with another prolific scorer Cyle Larin, Canada’s offence has to be respected in this match.

Canada should stick with the same players that started in the win over Peru with Jonathan David expected to start in attack. Alphonso Davies should also continue up front, with Richie Laryea featuring at left-back.

Ben Brereton Diaz has come off the bench in the last two matches and could be given the nod in attack ahead of Eduardo Vargas. Marcelino Nunez could also come in for Rodrigo Echeverria while Alexis Sanchez should retain his place in the team.

Canada: Crepeau, Johnston, Bombito, Cornelius, Laryea, Kone, Eustaquio, Millar, Davies, David, Larin
Chile: Bravo, Isla, Diaz, Lichnovsky, Suazo, Nunez, Pulgar, Davila, Osorio, Sanchez, Brereton Diaz

With Canada and Chile targeting a win on Sunday, an open encounter could be on the cards. Both teams could be backed to score at evens with Betfred, who is also offering odds of 5/4 for over 2.5 goals.

There have been a number of late showings in Group A of the Copa America, so the second half could be tipped to produce more goals at 21/20 with Betfred.
